Katich, Hussey keep Australians afloat

Katich (92) , along with captain Ricky Ponting (55) shared a century stand after losing opener Shane Watson for a duck. Simon Katich looked like he would get to his century, but fell eight runs short. Katich shared fruitful partnerships with Ponting and then with Michael Hussey (66) to take Australia to a comfortable position on a flat track on the first day.

After Katich’s departure, Hussey and Michael Clarke (41) continued the run glut with Marcus North also chipping in with an unbeaten 42. North and Haddin, making a comeback from a long injury layoff, were at the crease at stumps on the first day.
