Man dies after making futile bid to catch robber

The deceased has been identified as Damodara Suvarna of Haleyangadi.
According to the localites, a robber entered the house of one Bhoja Shetty in Haleyangadi at around 2 am and snatched the gold chain worth Rs 55,000 which Shetty’s wife Kalyani Shetty was wearing.
He later entered Damodara Suvarna’s house at around 3 am by breaking open the back door. After stealing gold ornaments and cash kept in a shelf, he tried to snatch a gold chain weighing 5 sovereign which Suvarna’s wife Savithri was wearing. Though Suvarana tried to catch the robber on hearing his wife’s screams, the robber managed to escape from the scene.
Later, the grief-stricken Suvarna died of heart attack immediately after realising that the money kept in the shelf of his house was stolen.
Halmaddi seized, 3 held
Police raided a Halmaddi processing unit being run illegaly by one Usman Haji at Berike near Bellippady village of Puttur taluk and seized property worth Rs 1.4 lakh including 400 kgs of unprocessed Halmaddi and a jeep. Three persons have been arrested in this connection. Halmaddi is a semi liquid resin taken from Ailanthus malabarica tree and used in incense sticks.
Puttur Town police have registered a case.
