Pop diva Madonna has apologised for using a racial slur in a picture she posted on Instagram.

Madonna, 55, posted a picture of her 13-year-old son Rocco on the photo-sharing website and added a caption which included a variation of the N-word and that attracted a lot of criticism, told Hollywood Reporter.

The caption read, "No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out!" She then added a variation of the N-word in reference to his son.

The 'Queen of Pop' quickly deleted the racist caption after seeing negative response on the web.

Later, the 'Beautiful Stranger' hitmaker in her apology said, "Forgive me. I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N word on Instagram. It was not meant as a racial slur. I am not a racist. There's no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention."

"It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it's a provocative word and I apologise if it gave people the wrong impression," she added.Madonna had earlier this year posted a picture of her son holding liquor bottles, which too did not go well with her fans on the internet
