HC refuses to cancel bail to corporator Gowramma

The High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition filed by the prosecution seeking cancellation of bail granted to Azad Nagar Corporator Gowramma, who is accused of complicity in the murder of RTI activist Lingaraju. The court directed the prosecution to approach the trial court for any relief.

At the same time, Justice Budihal R B rejected the bail application moved by C Govindaraju, Gowramma’s husband, who is the prime accused in the case. Gowramma was arrested in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, on December 12, 2012, and granted bail on April 5, 2013.

The prosecution had sought the cancellation of bail granted to Gowramma, contending that there was prima facie evidence of her complicity in Lingaraju’s murder. The Special Public Prosecutor, Sadashivamurthy, argued that the accused No 1, Govindaraju, had used Gowramma’s mobile phone in the conspiracy “to eliminate the victim.”

Govindaraju also moved his bail application. The court then clubbed both the petitions together. Justice Budhihal rejected both of them. He directed the prosecution to approach the trial court for relief.

Lingaraju was hacked to death on November 20, 2012, by a gang that was allegedly hired by Govindaraju. The murder was said to be an act of vengeance as Lingaraju had lodged a complaint against the couple with the Lokayukta police, alleging that Gowramma had amassed wealth disproportionate to her known source of income.
Further investigation also revealed Gowramma’s “complicity” as she was believed to have “financed” the murder by pledging her jewellery.
