Sonia rally in Gulbarga on February 1

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit Gulbarga on February 1 to inaugurate an ESI hospital and medical complex and attend a public rally to be organised by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

The rally has ostensibly been organised to claim credit for according the special status to the Hyderabad Karnataka region under Article 371(j) of the Constitution. The party workers from all six districts of the region will attend the rally. But the Congress chief’s arrival and departure have not been finalised yet. Sonia’s visit is part of the party’s campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, sources said.

KPCC chief G Parameshwara has convened a meeting with elected representatives and the party leaders of the region on Saturday at the party’s main office on Queen’s Road in Bangalore. District In-charge ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs of the six districts will attend the meeting.

Sources said the party was organising similar public rallies in three other revenue divisions of Bangalore, Mysore and Belgaum. A public rally in the Bangalore division is likely to be organised in Tumkur in the second week of February. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is likely to attend the rallies in Mysore and Belgaum, sources said.
