No release of prisoners this Republic Day

Last Updated 24 January 2014, 21:54 IST

There will be no release of prisoners based on ‘good conduct’ this Republic Day with the State government deciding to recommend its list to the Governor for Independence Day.

The government had recently prepared guidelines for release of certain categories of prisoners by recommending grant of pardon. The guidelines had been prepared based on the Supreme Court’s order and the Governor’s suggestion.

“The Cabinet has recently cleared the guidelines (January 3). Due to paucity of time we could not prepare the list. We will do it for Independence Day,” Home Minister K J George told Deccan Herald.

The Governor, on the recommendation of the State Cabinet, is vested with the power to grant pardon or commute sentences of convicts in certain cases under Article 161 of the Constitution. The previous BJP government had sent a list of 594 convicts for release to Raj Bhavan thrice but the governor had sent back the file asking the government to come out with proper guidelines first.
