Under-22 camp begins

A 10-day camp for the Indian probables for the Under-22 AFC Championship qualifiers began here at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Monday.

Fiftynine players reported for the opening day. A few more players will join once Pune FC finish their assignment in the AFC Champions League. A total of 72 players were handpicked out of which 35 players will be shortlisted after the second stage of the selections trials in June.

The players were put through their paces under the eyes of senior team coach Wim Koevermans and All India Football Federation (AIFF) Academy Instructor Scott O’Donell.
Koevermans and his team have already selected a few of the 35 players following their consistent performances in the I-League.

The U-22 AFC Championships qualifiers (to be held in a league format) is likely to be held between July 17-31 in one country.

The Championships will also double up as a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in 2016 with the top three teams qualifying for the quadrennial event.
