Gujarat Cong in trouble as Patel leaders quit party

Already on the back foot after losing three consecutive Assembly elections, more trouble seems to be in store  for the Gujarat Congress ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

With Patel leaders dumping the party, the Congress is in troubled waters, especially in the Saurashtra region.

First it was the former deputy chief minister Narhari Amin, the then gun-toting MP Vithal Radadiya and his son Jayesh, and the latest embarrassment is MLA Bavkubhai Undhad. He is the latest in the list of Patel leaders from Saurashtra dumping the Congress for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Undhad won the Babra Assembly seat from Saurashtra in 2012 on a Congress ticket had left the BJP more than a decade ago.

A confident BJP claimed that leaders were returning due to the rising popularity of party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
