Karnataka in driver's seat in Ranji finals

Karnataka batsmen continued to frustrate Maharashtra as they built a huge lead on the third day of the Ranji Trophy final here on Friday.

Overnight 230 for no loss in reply to Maharashtra’s 305 all out, Karnataka took their score to 474 for seven at the end of the day. With an overall lead of 169 they are in a position to press for victory with two days remaining in the game.

K L Rahul, 94 not out overnight, duly completed his century before falling for 131 while the other overnight not out batsman, Ganesh Satish, went for 117. Karnataka were also well-served by Robin Uthappa, who returned to the crease after retiring hurt the previous day to make a brisk 72.

The Maharashtra bowlers continued to peg away in the hope of finding an error or two from the blades of the rival batsmen and the rewards came after Rahul, Satish and Uthappa departed.

Manish Pandey was traped leg before by left-arm paceman Samad Fallah, who also sent back C M Gautam (7) and Amit Verma (29), to trigger some life in the Maharashtra ranks. In between, Karun Nair, who was in great touch in the last three matches, departed for 44 but Karnataka remained very much in the driver’s seat.

Shreyas Gopal (9) and captain R Vinay Kumar (8) were at the crease when stumps were drawn.

Brief scores:

Maharashtra (I innings): 305.

Karnataka (I innings): 474/ 7(Robin Uthappa 72, K L Rahul 131, Ganesh Satish 117, Manish Pandey 36, Karun Nair 44, Samad Fallah 3/74).
