'25,000 people in Udupi district avail BPL cards'

District stands third in distribution of BPL cards in State

Udupi district stands third in the distribution of BPL cards next only to Ramanagar and Kodagu districts respectively.

Responding to a query here at general body meeting of Taluk Panchayath, the Food and Civil Supplies Officer Sadhashiv Rao said as many as 25,000 BPL cards have been distributed in Udupi district, of which 12,200 BPL cards are distributed in Udupi taluk. 

Zilla Panchayat President Upendra Nayak stressed that the eligible BPL families should not be deprived of the facilities. Nearly 50 per cent of BPL cards are distributed in Udupi taluk, he added.

Member Devdas Hebbar alleged that Padubelle Gram Panchayath Development Officer has misused his power by availing title deeds to those who were not the actual beneficiaries for availing the government land. 

Though he has recieved a transfer order, he is not accepting his transfer to Mysore. He added that illegal encroachments in Padubelle are on the rise and the illegal encroachers claim during the inquiry that they have paid Rs 80,000 to GP. Several families are trying to encroach government lands. This move comes in contradiction of the motto of the provision of 94 (C) rule, he said.

325 illegal houses

Tahsildar Guruprasad said that there  are nearly 325 houses in government land in Padubelle and these many houses do not have the survey number. Stating that the issue of encraochment of government lands is being considered, he ruled out any provisions allowing to construct new houses and repair the existing houses in the government land.

Deputy Commissioner has issued orders to display the names of siteless people on the notice board of every GP in order to achieve transparency in making land available for the actual beneficiaries,  Nayak said and stressed on the need to initiate actions against the PDOs who fail to discharge their duties effectively.

He said the correction process of electoral photo identity card (EPIC) should be continous. The Tahsildar said that nearly 2.5 per cent of mistakes have been detected in the EPIC cards, which shall be corrected in the month of February and March.
