Canine owners show off pets

The second edition of the Indian Dog Speciality Show on Saturday witnessed many indigineously bred dogs being paraded in the City. 

Hosted by the Mysore Kennel Club, Bangalore, at the Football Grounds in Hebbal, the show was dominated by five Indian breeds - Mudhol hound, Caravan hound, Rajapalyam, Pashmi and Chippiparai.

Apart from Karnataka, people from parts of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh had brought along their pets to the show. There were a total of 94 dogs at the show, of which 60 were Mudhol hounds, 12 Rajapalyams, 10 Caravan hounds, 10 Pashmis and two Chippiparais.

Prasad Mayekar, who had come all the way from Mumbai, said: “This is the second time I am taking part in the show. I think it is a wonderful platform to know more about different breeds of dog and promote them. One of my Caravan hounds was named the second best in the show, while my Pashmi (whose name is Charlie), won the third place this year.” Mukund Joshi, who was waiting in line enthusiastically to show off his Pashmi, a labrador and three Caravan hounds, said: “This is the first time I am taking part and it is a real delight to watch so many Indian breeds under one roof. I hope to come back next year.” 

“The number of participants this year has gone up, compared with the 60 last year. The winners were declared based on the conformity of breed standards,” said P V Yathinder, president, Mysore Kennel Club, Bangalore.

The event on Saturday was judged by D Krishnamurthy, vice chairman of the KCI. Rama, a Mudhol hound raised by Venkappa (from Karnataka), emerged winner in the ‘Best in Show’ category. 

Mysore Kennel Club will also be holding the 104th and 105th Championship Dog Show on Sunday, where, as many as 540 dogs of various breeds will take part. Entry is free for participants and Rs 100 for others. The show will start at 9 am at the same venue.
