Experts to drive ESDM plans

Move aimed at scaling up domestic production and exports

The Department of Electronics and IT (DEITy) is on the lookout for consultants to help chart out a roadmap for developing electronics design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector in India, which is poised to touch $400 billion turnover by 2020.

These consultants will be responsible for formulation and implementation of policies and guidelines related to the promotion of the Indian ESDM sector, DEITy has said in an advertisement.

Demand for technology products, specifically electronics, have seen huge growth. Estimates suggest the demand for electronics hardware in the country could touch $400 billion by 2020, from $45 billion in 2009. The production in India is expected to reach $104 billion by 2020, creating a gap of $296 billion in demand and production.

This presents an opportunity for companies in the ESDM sector to look at India as their next destination to cater to the domestic Indian demand as well as an exports hub.

“ESDM promotion programme of DEITy seeks to radically change the electronics hardware manufacturing in the country by increasing value addition, encouraging technology development and Indian IP creation with a view to creating domestic manufacturing capacity of $400 billion in next 10 years,” the advertisement on DEITy website said.

The team will be responsible for techno-commercial evaluation of project proposals received and recommending various financial incentives, tendering/selection for government procurement of services and project formulation and management.

The government recently approved National Policy on Electronics (NPE) which involves investment of about $100 billion and providing employment to around 28 million by 2020.Under the NPE, the government seeks turnover of $400 billion by 2020 that includes $55 billion from chip design and embedded software industry and $80 billion from exports of products.
