Amid opposition parties expressing concern over Karnataka’s attempt to woo investors Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha on Monday claimed that her state would get investments to the tune of Rs 42,400 crores from 16 companies.

During a debate, opposition parties expressed concern over the development and drew the attention of the government on tannery units of Tiruppur shifting base to other states apparently referring to Karnataka’s move to attract investors especially from the industrial belt.

In her reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor for his address, she said her government would give a final shape to the investment proposals submitted by these companies in the next couple of months.

She said ever since the AIADMK government assumed office in May 2011, the state had attracted investments of Rs 29,558 crores through signing of Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) and single-window clearances.

A total of Rs 10,660 crore has been invested by the industries after allotment of land and giving other clearances. Jayalalitha said the Rs 542 crore modernisation work at Ariyalur cement plant belonging to Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation would begin soon.

Earlier during the debate, State Industries Minister P Thangamani took a dig at Karnataka’s recent offer in Chamrajnagar district, which was projected as an ideal investment destination saying, “It (Karnataka) has not disclosed the whereabouts of the 1,400 acres (earmarked by it) in the district”.
