The 'darling' of all music-lovers

ENCHANTING SONGSTRESS

Bollywood playback singer Rekha Bhardwaj and Shashi Suman of ‘Indian Idol’ fame performed as part of the ‘Alive India in Concert’ at Phoenix MarketCity recently.

The entertaining show started off with the presenter involving the audience in some fun games. There was a cake-cutting ceremony for Supratik, the organiser, who celebrated his birthday on the same day. Soon, it was time for the artiste of the day — Rekha Bhardwaj — to take the stage. She started the show with Sufi Zikhar, an invocation piece.

She sang many other Sufi numbers as well as Bollywood songs. After singing Tere Bin Lagta Nahin Dil Mera, she told the audience, “Music has no language. It’s soulfulness and energy fills one’s heart.” Rekha also sang songs like Teri Raza, Ye Fakira, Namak and ‘Darling’, which left everyone asking for more.

In between the performance, Rekha also introduced her band Aziza and each of the artistes got a few minutes to play solo and show their prowess. As Rekha swirled on the stage while singing most of the Sufi songs, the audience was amused and intrigued.

Post Rekha’s performance, Shashi Suman came on stage and sang songs like Chaap Tilak, Kesariya Balam Padharo Mare Des, Lal Ishq, Mera Piya Ghar Aaya, Aaj Din Chadiya, Jaaniya among others. The crowd was excited and singing along as well as applauding the young musician’s performance.

Supratik, the organiser of the concert, was overjoyed with the response. “This was the most touching way to be wished on my birthday. Also to have Rekhaji perform here was one of the best gifts for the City,” he said.

Though the crowd was quiet at the beginning of the performance, music-lovers started to have more fun as the concert progressed. Sayonee, a college student who came with her parents, was ecstatic that Shashi Suman sang Sayonee.

“I always feel so happy when any singer sings Sayonee. The concert was organised well and the series is getting better with each concert,” she said. Sharada Pramod, another member of the audience, loved the choice of songs by both the singers.
“When we are bringing our kids to the show, we have to worry about the sleazy songs that are there in the industry now. This was a family concert and everything was managed well. This shows the effort that went behind the concert,”
she said.
