'Experience has greatly enhanced my instincts'

FRESH ROLE
Last Updated 04 February 2014, 16:16 IST

After playing a serious role in his first film Student of the Year, Siddharth Malhotra is ready to hit the big screen with his second film Hasee to Phasee on February 7.

In the previous film where he had to share the celluloid with actors like Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, the 28-year-old actor this time is going solo and he is excited about it. Everything is new for him from story to the director, the actress and the role he is playing in the film.

“It is not a typical hero- type role.  The name of my character is Nikhil Bharadwaj, who runs an unsuccessful event management company. He is just like any other guy whom you can easily find around yourself,” says Siddharth.

Absorbed totally into the film, Siddharth says, “There is no Karan Johar effect and no extravagant sets, Vinil Mathew (director of Hasee...) has kept everything normal. He did not concentrate upon  the visual appearance of the film instead he has tried to make it a far more real story  so that audience can easily relate to it.”

“I consciously wanted to do something different,” exclaims Siddharth, for whom it is first solo film of his career. “I don’t feel any pressure but being a ‘solo’ actor in the film increases the responsibility,” he says. What helped Siddharth in satisfying his hunger for good work was his conscious effort to get involved in the production activities of the film.

“Somehow I was more concerned about the creative aspect of the film and used to give my inputs to Vinil. There was no business angle to it,” he clarifies. “Since I know the entire process of directing a film is nerve wracking, and it’s my solo film, so I thought why not  contribute to the maximum.”  For an actor like Siddharth Malhotra, who has worked as an assistant director, this wasn’t a tough task.

Talking about how his experience as an AD helped in acting, Siddharth says, “It has strengthened my instincts. It is because you get to know what can really work in the industry. Vinil came to me with a fresh story. I knew the guy had a different style of making a film and he will make Hasee to... in a unique manner.

I followed my instincts and signed it.”  Well, producer of the film Anurag Kashyap and Karan Johar also matter, which Siddharth forgets to mention.

When asked about Parineeti Chopra, who is more experienced than him, Siddharth says,I didn’t expect both of us could establish a connect so easily,” says Siddharth.

“Both of us come from North Indian families, belong to Punjabi families and somewhere our sensibilities also match. She speaks Punjabi better than me,” he says and signs off.
