Postal customers can now operate their accounts and avail themselves of banking services at any post office in Bangalore through the core banking solutions (CBS) offered by the Department of Posts (DoP).

The initiative was kick-started at R T Nagar and HAL post offices a week ago. The Bangalore GPO on Raj Bhavan Road will shift to CBS on February 10.

Chief Post Master Ashutosh Kumar Hanjura told Deccan Herald: “Customers having saving bank accounts or any other accounts such as recurring deposit, fixed deposit, etc at the GPO need not come all the way here. They can deposit or withdraw money from any post office with the CBS facility. Presently, they can utilise the service at RT Nagar and HAL POs. In phases, all branches in the City will offer the CBS.”

The ATM installed at the GPO last year will start functioning once the CBS system rolls out. Presently, the DoP runs about 1.50 lakh post offices across the country. In Bangalore, there are 300.

After its launch in the City, the system shifted to CBS in Kolar, Mandya, Sirsi and Karwar POs too.

The long-term agenda includes extending the CBS to banks dotting the City so that customers can operate their accounts easily and not depend on post offices alone.

Deputy Chief Postmaster Dinesh Khare said: “The existing account number of customers will be replaced by new ones. The CBS will function with the help from Pinnacle Software. By March 31, 2014, the CBS will migrate to 159 post offices in Karnataka Circle.”

Khare further said internet banking, mobile banking and other related services will also be enabled followed by the CBS system launch gradually. At Bangalore GPO, about 40,000 people have accounts.

Parvathamma H S, who holds an account at Gayathri Nagar branch, said: “I stay at JP Nagar and I have to go to Gayathri Nagar every time I do a banking transaction. It’s a time-consuming and exhausting affair. If the CBS is started at all branches, it will be beneficial, especially for elderly citizens.”
