An elated Prof Rao said: “I am happy to get this award which my country has conferred upon me. This will inspire and encourage the youth who want to foray into the field of science and research. I will continue to work as a scientist,” he added.

When asked if he rued that the country’s highest civilian order was conferred on him so late, he said: “ I don't have any regrets. I received Padam Vibhushan 30 years ago. I am happy that they have recognised my work.”

At the airport, he was received by his colleagues from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) including Prof Shiv Prasad from the department of Chemistry and Physics of Materials Unit (CPMU) and other administrative officers.
