CID probe sought into granite quarrying

Social activist S R Hiremath on Wednesday vowed to destroy Energy Minister D K Shivakumar’s “Republic of Kanakapura” just like the “Republic of Bellary” of former minister G Janardhana Reddy.

Addressing mediapersons here, Hiremath said that detailed studies by the National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) showed serious illegalities, irregularities and criminalities including granite quarrying in Kanakapura taluk. He alleged that these irregularities happened at the behest of Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a Lok Sabha member from Bangalore Rural. Hiremath said: “Two separate reports by Dr U V Singh in 2006 and A M Annaiah in 2007 reveal how Shivakumar blatantly led and supported mining mafia abusing his powers. His wife Usha Shivakumar, brother Suresh and other associates were partners in the illegalities.”

The social activist claimed that there were many “clinching evidences” that showed rampant illegal granite quarrying in the forest areas of the taluk. He demanded an inquiry by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or any independent agency duly empowered to take up investigation of cases.
