Big crorepatis among RS nominees

Fifty of the 59 candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections are crorepatis while two of them, including Congress leader Digvijay Singh, have serious criminal cases against them.

Elections to 55 seats in the Upper House of Parliament will be held on Friday for which 59 people are in the fray. In most of the seats, the candidate will be declared a winner as there are no opponents.

The analysis of 58 out of 59 candidates by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the New Election Watch (NEW) shows that the average assets of Congress candidates is Rs 42.32 crore while that of BJP  candidates is Rs 85.36 crore. For the Nationalist Congress Party it is Rs 23.02 crore and Rs 21.99 lakh for the CPM. Six independent candidates have average assets of Rs 110.68 crore.

Ravindra Kishore Sinha of the BJP from Bihar has declared highest assets worth Rs 857.11 crore. The poorest is Trinamool leader Ahmed Hassan with Rs 4.04 lakh. Actor Mithun Chakrabarty, who is contesting from on a Trinamool ticket, has assets worth Rs 101 crore.
