Ananth Kumar, Ashoka stymie DVS attempts to contest from B'lore North

The internal tussle in the BJP over the Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituency boils down to a fight among the party heavyweights to retain their political influence on the State capital.

BJP national general secretary H N Ananth Kumar and former deputy chief minister
R Ashoka have been vehemently opposing the party giving a ticket to former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda to contest from the Bangalore North constituency.

The two leaders are said to have almost succeeded in convincing the party central leadership in New Delhi on Thursday that Gowda should be given a ticket from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, from where he has won on two occasions.

BJP insiders said Kumar and Ashoka, whose political base is Bangalore, are apprehensive that Gowda would emerge as a parallel power centre in the State capital if he is allowed to nurture Bangalore as his political constituency. Bangalore has always been politically very significant with its three Lok Sabha constituencies and 28 Assembly segments.

Being a former chief minister and party president, Gowda, if elected from Bangalore North, is sure to emerge as a heavyweight and prove a threat to Kumar and Ashoka.

Ashoka has even gone to the extent of branding Gowda “an outsider”. He also tried to back the candidature of Malleswaram MLA C N Ashwathnarayana for the constituency as a consensus candidate.

Any constituency

On his part, Gowda has said that as a former party president, he can choose any constituency. Besides, he owns a house in Subramanyanagar, which is part of Bangalore North.

The large Vokkaliga population in the constituency, a community Gowda belongs to, could serve as a vote bank.

Interestingly, the BJP is organising a Bangalore North workers’ convention at Malleswaram on Saturday to be inaugurated by senior leader Venkaiah Naidu and presided by Ananth Kumar and Ashoka. The name of Gowda does not figure in the invite.
