Doff your hats to Milton. Bow in reverence. For, this Milton shows how movies are made. His Goli Soda may not be arty class. Still stark, true to life, enterprising, engaging and done with honesty, Goli Soda wafts across as a whiff of welcome breeze amid commercial chaff churned out week after week as ensemble entertainment.

Goli Soda sees the foursome of the much-accoladed Pasanga return, now mature but retaining all the finesse and sureness of craft that fetched two – Kishore and Sree Raam – the National Best Child Artist Award, Best Dialogues for its director Pandiraj and Best Feature Film in Tamil. Though the story is no great shakes, it’s Milton’s screenplay and nifty knitting his narrative in a telling manner that covets you.

Presenting a poignant snatch of life that turns the spotlight on the lives of four daily wage workers, who carry fruits and vegetables without an identity of their own, for they are orphans bound by that fact and camaraderie they share despite their dismal existence and pitiful earning they eke out. A kindhearted soul in Aachi, for whom Pulli, Setty, Sithappa and Murugesh work, sees them meet NKB aka Naidu which helps them set up an eatery to serve food to shopkeepers of Koyambedu market.

Even as a semblence of meaning slowly permeates their existence, their lives flowing placidly on an even keel like a serene river, and two of them even harbour visions of rainbow romance in their listless lives, the arrival of Naidu’s brother-in-law Mayilu, an alcoholic, turns everything topsy-turvy for them.

How the foursome dare the elders and wriggle their way out forms the fulcrum of Goli Soda, which simply sizzles as the acerbic beverage does. Try then Goli Soda and will have no regrets having tasted its frothy fable that leaves a healthy aftertaste.
