SC indicates relief to Kodnani on medical grounds

The Supreme Court Wednesday indicated some relief to former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani who sought extension of her interim bail on medical grounds. She is a convict in the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre and undergoing life term.

Kodnani wanted her three-month interim bail period to be extended by 180 days for healing of her burn injuries.

A bench presided over by Justice H L Dattu posted her petition challenging February 8 Gujarat HC order refusing her relief, for hearing on Thursday.

“We are convinced that she has suffered burn injuries and she is in a pitiable condition. We may think of some favourable order for her,” the bench said, after senior advocate Ram Jethmalani referred to an incident in which she sustained injuries after a lamp fell on her at a temple.

The bench adjourned the matter by a day to enable Kodnani’s counsel to put on record some additional documents.

Kodnani is one of the 32 persons convicted in the Naroda Patiya massacre case.
She is also facing a criminal trial in the 2002 Naroda Gam massacre case.
