Maldives, a beach bum's paradise

Last Updated 15 February 2014, 12:33 IST

Maldives — sun, sand and surf. Nothing describes Maldives better. In the peak of the summer heat, my brain conjured up images of fresh water, cocktails, swim-suits and sunscreen.

A small group comprising 26 islands forms the Maldives group of nations located southwest of India in the Indian Ocean. Deriving its name from an age-old Sanskrit notation — mala dwipa, meaning a garland of islands, Maldives is a picture-perfect place to unwind, relax and enjoy. Since Maldives is a group of little islands, every island houses just one resort. The capital city Male is on a little island right next to the island of the airport. Ibrahim Nasser International Airport is probably the envy of all the airports around. It lies right in the middle of the sea!

So, if you are up for a holiday in Maldives, do look up for a booking in any of the picturesque resorts around. A short sweet ride in a speed-boat from the airport takes you away from all the hustle-bustle. You can just laze around the resort on your private beach or fill your tummy with lip-smacking food from the restaurants or go on an adventure with the innumerable water sports facilities.

Go on a diving experience in the clear waters of the Indian Ocean and wonder at the exquisite beauty of underwater coral reefs. Keep a look out for the colourful fishes, manta rays, sharks and turtles. You can even get a crash course in snorkelling if diving is a little too much for your taste. Furthermore, you have glass-bottomed boats where you can float over the ocean with colourful fish zooming away beneath you. Jet skis, parasailing and photo flights are some more options to appeal to your wilder side. Photo flights, in particular, are a unique experience. A short ride in a small plane over all the breathtaking islands leaves you asking for more.

You can enjoy day-long trips to Male to visit mosques, religious centres and shopping centres. You also have the privilege of experiencing the daily life of residents on a trip to local villages, ending the excursion with a scrumptious lunch, courtesy of the fresh catch from the ocean.

Do not forget the dazzling sunset cruise with the dolphins. Hitch a ride with cute dolphins as they take you into a world of their own.  Maldives boasts of a rich culture. Boogie the night away with the traditional dance, boduberu, or sing your blues away with the karaoke nights.

The resorts will also be happy to help you out with customising your holidays with photo shoots and candle-light dinners. Owing to a number of uninhabited islands, you can also enjoy a beautiful and unique experience of a meal on a deserted island.

With its pure beauty, exquisite sights, enrapturing surroundings and touching hospitality, Maldives will surely give you the experience of your lifetime. So, find that camera and sunscreen and head off to this exotic and tropical beach paradise.
