Man attacks pilgrims near Tirumala

Last Updated 15 February 2014, 21:24 IST

A man created a flutter on the road from Alipiri to Tirumala on Saturday by attacking devotees near the Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple.

According to Tirumala Two Town CI Srinivasa Murthy, Kumar from Ambattur in Tamil Nadu pelted stones on a batch of devotees from Chennai and then attacked them with wooden logs. Three persons, including two women, were hurt.

The man then escaped into the woods. A few pilgrims informed police. Kumar was eventually traced and arrested after the victims identified him. All victims were admitted to Aswini Hospital while Kumar was sent to SVR Ruia Hospital in Tirupati. The incident once again brought to limelight the lack of security on the Alipiri route.

Meanwhile, the TTD was verifying facts about Rs 4 crore deposited in a national bank, following a letter from a devotee who had sent Rs 10 lakh to avail the rare “Udayastamana Seva”, but received no response from the board. However, the board was not aware of the amount as advance booking for Arjita Sevas were cancelled following a scam by TTD employees in collusion with a bank.
