Walkers say no to Cubbon Park authority

The proposal to set up a Cubbon Park Management Authority (CPMA) announced in the State budget 2014-15 has not gone well with members of the Cubbon Park Walkers' Association.

In a meeting held on Sunday, the Walkers' Association decided to hold a protest by roping in schools, corporates and residents within the next two weeks. The association has already staged protest on three to four occasions against the proposal to set up the authority. A memorandum will be submitted to the Horticulture Department, Principal Secretary to chief minister and other officials.

Association president S Umesh said that there had been no response to a memorandum submitted to the governor.

“While we are not against the development of the park, the focus should be more on clearing encroachments. The park sprawls across 240 acres out of which 48 acres has been encroached upon.”

Actor Bhavana opined that decision making powers will be fully entrusted to government once the authority is set up . "It will function like any other development authority. There is no need to set up CPMA. The department and the association is maintaining the park well," she said.
