Lucia, power of social crowdfunding

Big bucks evaded Pawan Kumar, as he ventured into the high stakes world of film-making.

So, he dived deep into social networks to do something no Kannadiga had done before: Crowdfunding. That trust in his audience, the belief that he could create a movie from the collective inputs of people spread across the world but connected through Facebook, paid off: Lucia, the movie broke records to carve out a all-new path.

Screening a short video on a shirtless man, who danced and inspired a huge crowd to follow suit, Pawan Kumar told his story. As the awe-struck audience watched, Kumar explained how he became that shirtless man, posting his Rs 50 lakh proposal for the movie project online and how it generated unprecedented interest on a global scale. “I got thousands of visitors on that site, I personally responded to 800 emails. Eventually, the project collected Rs 51 lakh in 27 days. They funded it because they wanted a Kannada film they could be proud of.”

Kumar found his actors and singers for the movie through a unique talent search on Facebook. “Everytime I needed a scene, like I required a house with red oxide floor, I would put it up on Facebook. Hundreds responded.” It was crowdsourcing of ideas, funds, actors, at its best.
