'Brains n Beats' fest off to a flying start

The fourth edition of Deccan Herald “Brains n Beats inter-collegiate festival kicked off with great enthusiasm and active participation from around 70 colleges at Oxford College of Arts and Science here on Wednesday.

The two-day annual fest which usually comprises of a quiz (brains) and dance (beats) competition has been supplemented by the addition of a new event, a debate competition this year.

The quiz competition marked the beginning of the fest and saw as many as 250 teams taking part in the preliminary round. Satish Ashok and Mrinal Parekh from PES University came first in the competition and won a cash prize of Rs 20,000.

Another two teams comprising Allen Tais and Sai Sachin R from St Joseph College (PG Centre) and Roshan Kate and Arvind V from BMS College of Engineering won the second and third prizes of Rs 14,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. Teams from IIM-B and IISc won consolation prizes.

Despite being a new event added only this year, the debate competition saw a number of registrations, as many as 250 students. A preliminary round was conducted out of which 20 finalists were chosen. Abhishek P M from Acharya Patshala Commerce College bagged the first prize of Rs 5,000 while Sandeep S from KLE College and Tabish Imam from IIM-B came second and third winning Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. Consolation prizes were given to PES College and M S Ramiah College students.

The dance competition that will take place on Friday will see students display their moves in two major categories – semi classical and contemporary. Around 50 colleges have already registered for the competition.

Arena Animation, Paramount Nutrition and Volunteers for Better India are the co-partners of the festival.
