Get back on track

Lifestyle-related disorders, stress and discontentment are a result of imbalanced living. It throws both, your body and mind off track. All you need to do is restore that balance to reclaim peace and harmony in life, write  Bharat & Shalan Savur.

What heaven is to the spirit, health is to the body—both are pure and natural. Stress and the ensuing sickness come from anything that deviates from our nature—eating and sleeping at irregular hours, dwelling on memories of rejections, suppression, hatred, doubt, and disgust.

Emotional insecurity causes back pain. Disgust causes inflammation in the intestinal lining. Also, certain daily conditions—loud noise, overcrowded commuting, and acute mental discomfort due to unpleasant colleagues/relatives/ neighbours keep aggravating and imbalancing our system. Adrenaline and the stress hormone, cortisol, raise the heart rate, blood pressure, and rapid respiration.

To start with, we need to be anchored where we are. We need to learn to stick to certain things in life. Too many people abruptly leave jobs, country, move residence, divorce, and what not... But entering a new external environment is rather testing. Enormous energy goes into adapting. Whereas, in a familiar routine and landscape, that same energy can be beautifully harnessed to reach a space of tranquil wholeness, where we can deal with life with a far greater clarity.

Any pain or illness is a cry for a remedy. Restorative exercises are the best way to tackle lifestyle-related body pains and mental stress. These exercises stretch pinched muscles and nerves, and straighten out any awkwardness in our postures. Bruised worn spirits need succor as does a tired, aching body. Placing soft pillows around the body and playing soothing instrumental music softly in the background is a simple, effective way to transport yourself into a tranquil world. Similarly, never underestimate the healing power of a timely cup of hot coffee or cooling buttermilk. It is not about living by rigid rules, but by finding our natural flow and living by it.
Next, regularise your life to restore body-mind rhythms. A routine puts your body and mind at ease. Have a normal and regular sleep pattern. Rest in quiet moments in between tasks and appointments. Eat well-cooked, nourishing foods. Long warm showers wash away your mental and physical tensions. Go cycling for at least half an hour in the morning or evening. Interact with easy, cheerful, wise people. Read inspiring books. They are all quite simple.

Learn to relax in contentment and discover to your delight that fulfillment can be an eternal state within you.
