Kinect 2

Consoles have been the thumping heart of the video game industry for decades. But when the latest generation of consoles like Microsoft’s Xbox One arrived a few months ago, they landed in a gaming landscape reshaped by popular and cheaper games made for mobile devices and Facebook.

Those changes are a big reason that Microsoft often pitches the Xbox One as more than a gaming system. The company wants the Xbox One to be the centre of a home’s entertainment universe, providing Skype video calls and playing television shows, music and more.

Many of the Xbox One’s most advanced features are tied to the latest Kinect, a short sensor bar that ships with the console.  Now in its second version, the Kinect allows users to interact with the console through the system’s motion-detection technology, or through voice commands.

So far, consumers seem interested: Microsoft said it had sold more than 3 million Xbox Ones, which retail for $500 (Rs 31,065), last year.
