The spirit of participation

Last Updated 24 February 2014, 12:52 IST

The enthusiasm and energy of 500-odd students was palpable during Yuvtarang, a one-day youth fest held at the Indian Academy Degree College. The theme for this year’s fest was ‘Emerge from Trash’ and the students were encouraged to work around it. The college management did well in limiting the number of events and that seemed to have worked well among the students who participated in all the events.

Winning or losing was secondary and all that mattered to them was to fall in line with the spirit of participation. Among the events were group song and dance, mad ads, adaptune and fashion show. Dr T Somasekhar, chairman, Indian Academy Group of Institutions, was excited about the whole concept.

“We have always had an intra-college fests and each department of the college always has something going on. This is one of our biggest inter-college gathering. This year we have seen more than 35 colleges participate and it’s a remarkable change from the previous years. Our vision through this fest is to integrate creativity with academics and bring out the best in students on and off the stage,”

explains T Somasekhar. Actor Ramesh Aravind, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that the stage is a sacred place. “The stage can take you to places you could never imagine,” he said. He added, “Do not hide your talents. You must showcase them because you never know who is watching you. You all are the heroes of
tomorrow.”

The students were an excited lot as they not only got a chance to showcase their talents but forge new ties as well. Vivek from Army College said, “The event brought a lot of students together and more than anything it was an enjoyable experience.” Shreya, a student from Mount Carmel College, said, “It was an amazing event. I liked the street dance the most and I am looking forward to more events and coming back to this college.”

Sujatha, a student of Jyoti Nivas College, said, “What I like most about the fests is that we can participate in as many events as we want to. The spirit is infectious.” There was also a food festival where the students dished out some healthy yet tasty snacks.
