Athletes get short shrift at Kanteerava again

Last Updated 24 February 2014, 17:45 IST

What has Namma Metro got in common with the Sree Kanteerava Stadium? There is no metro line near the stadium, and there is none in the pipeline as well. The only parallel is the track and they never meet.

But the coming Saturday at the Sree Kanteerava will be all about the public transport system, with the inauguration of the Metro’s latest line (from Sampige Road to Peenya) scheduled here, for reasons hardly sporting.

The preparation for the inaugural function was in full swing on Monday, and the athletes and coaches training at the venue were the ones raising their voices. Many a time in the past, non-sporting ventures have cut into their time, hampering their preparations. It isn’t any different this time.

“We don’t know why the metro inauguration has to be held here,” said senior coach V R Beedu, echoing the sentiments of many athletes and coaches using the venue. “It is going to be a tough few days for us, it keeps happening every now and then,” he complained even as a film shooting went on in the background.

The woes of the athletes, it seems, look set to continue unless the authorities take a different stance.
