Bharti in fresh controversy

Former law minister and AAP leader Somnath Bharti was linked to a fresh controversy here Monday after some people alleged to be AAP workers assaulted an MCD official near the Deputy Commissioner office of south zone in Green Park.

Police said the victim, Ashok Kumar, is an executive engineer in South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

“He was allegedly beaten up by some people who were protesting against the demolition of a house in Hauz Khas in south Delhi,” a police official said.

The incident took place minutes before Bharti along with some of his supporters reached the spot to protest against the MCD and its demolition drive.

Bharti said those involved in the incident were not AAP workers and he had nothing to do with them.

He later met the south district DC along with his supporters in apparent show of force. In his complaint, the executive engineer said he was beaten up by four persons who were allegedly wearing AAP caps and protesting outside his office before Bharti arrived.Kumar in his statement said that while he was using the biometric system to mark his presence in the office, he was thrashed by the four persons before fleeing.

His colleagues rushed him to a nearby hospital.

“Kumar was targeted because he led a team that demolished an illegal house in Hauz Khas on February 22. The house belonged to Mahavir Singh, to whom the authorities had served two notices before carrying out the demolition,” an official said.

A complaint has been filed against four unidentified persons with Safdarjung Enclave police station under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

Police are checking CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
