Actor Anushka Sharma’s supposed ‘lip job’ could have led to a social media backlash. But her changed appearance with redefined and more voluminous lips has triggered a lot of curiosity.

Delhi-based dermatologist Indu Ballani said a number of young girls have inquired from her clinic about the possibilities of lip augmentation and the safety procedures to be followed to make sure the results turn out to be as desired.

“Many young girls are visiting us these days to know how actors and people in the showbiz have changed or enhanced their facial features,” said Ballani.

She said not all enhancing procedures can be strictly classified into the club of ‘plastic surgery’. The more commonly resorted to are treatments that are non-invasive or minimally invasive, and do not require the person to go under the knife.

A hyaluronic acid-based filler called Juvederm can be administered inside the skin to give more volume to the desired area, said Ballani.

Hyaluronic acid is a hydrophilic substance that promotes water absorption achieving deep hydration of the skin. The procedure lasts for almost 20 minutes.

“A product like Juvederm Voluma uses a thicker version hyaluronic acid and when injected can give a perfect pout to the lips. The fillers can give you a completely new pair of lips with a perfectly formed cupid’s bow,” dermatologist Simal Soin said.

The lip-enhancement procedure is not permanent and its effect lasts up to a year. She said the fillers are among the more popular cosmetic procedures today and the increased media talk about lip enhancement has fuelled more interest in people.
