Ragi at Re 1 for BPL families from March 1

Come March 1, ragi will be distributed at Re one a kg through public distribution system in the districts of Mandya, Mysore and Hassan.

Briefing reporters, Minister  for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao said with the introduction of ragi under Anna Bhagya scheme, BPL families with three or more members in the three districts will get 22 kg rice, six kg of wheat and two kg of ragi at |Re one per kg.

The scheme will be launched in Nanjangud taluk of Mysore district by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on March 1. The present stock of 10,000 metric tonnes with the government is sufficient for the scheme for next three to four months. If procurement of ragi increases, the government will extend it to other districts, Rao said.

Jowar on the list

Similarly, the government was planning to distribute jowar under Anna Bhagya scheme in north Karnataka districts, where it is a staple diet, in the next few months.

The minister said 71 cases had been booked against those who were found diverting rice meant for Anna Bhagya scheme and 9,000 quintals of rice had been seized.

Criminal cases had been filed against 40 people and 62 First Information Reports (FIRs) filed. The licences of 24 fair price shops had been suspended and 10 godown managers and four deputy directors had been kept under suspension for diverting rice, he added.
