Killer, wife quarreled over helping his family, say police

She objected to his shouldering everyone's responsibility

Frequent quarrels over shouldering the entire family’s responsibility by the drycleaner in Dwarka allegedly led to murdering his wife and two young daughters before hanging himself late on Sunday night.

A police officer told Deccan Herald that Ravinder Kanojia had borrowed a lot of money for expanding the house that was owned by him and his two brothers.

His wife Chanda did not want him to take the responsibility of his brothers too.

This allegedly was the bone of contention between the couple that led to frequent fights.“Chanda had problems as the couple had three daughters, two of whom were studying at a government school while the third was to be admitted into a private nursery school. She objected to his borrowing money for construction of the house under such a situation,” said the officer.

The three families which till now, stayed in the ground floor of their house in Vikas Vihar of Dwarka, had begun construction of two floors above the original house, so that each family could have a flat for themselves.

The brothers together ran a drycleaning business with three shops in different parts of south-west Delhi.

Less than a week before the tragedy struck the family, the two older sisters, now dead, had taken the entrance examination at a private school.

“They never created a loud scene during their quarrels. But the other family members possibly knew about the fights as well as the reason,” the officer said.

Investigations have revealed that Chanda on Sunday night again questioned his decision to borrow money which led to a heated exchange between them.

Probe so far

“Investigations so far show Ravinder, in a fit of rage, first tried to strangle his wife with a rope. Not sure that she had died, he then smashed her head with an iron pipe,” the officer said.

A rope had been found around Chanda’s neck on Monday morning.

Police suspected the children had possibly seen the murder take place due to which Ravinder felt the need to eliminate them too.

Since it was “sudden provocation” that night, their three-year-old daughter Bhavna was saved as she was with her grandmother in another house at that time.

According to neighbour Mange Ram Yadav, who claimed to have entered the house along with police, a pillow was found over dead Chanda’s face.

The two daughters, meanwhile, were neatly covered till their waist with a single blanket even as their heads were split open.

Police also claimed that the quarrels led Ravinder, who earlier never drank alcohol, had begun consuming liquor in secret of late.

An empty liquor bottle was found next to his hanging body. It is suspected that he emptied the entire bottle before opting for the noose.

Police are still awaiting the post-mortem report.
