It is said that ‘line’ is the ‘intellectual’ quality of a costume; if this is true, then ‘colour’ is the ‘emotional’ quality of a dress.

The colour of a costume or fabric either appeals to us or displeases us more than any other element. Cotton wool, silk, rayon, linen, and tinsel, if the attractiveness of our clothing rests upon the appearance of the fabric, it also depends upon the colour.
Bright or neon colours are in these days, but many of us are always inclined towards earth tones. A small clarification – colours that are considered earth tones are muted blues, browns, greys and greens whereas black and white are taken as neutral colours. The colours in an earth tone scheme are muted and flat in an emulation of the natural colours found in dirt, moss, trees, rocks and minerals. Many earth tones originate from clay earth pigments.

Earth tones have a very natural, sexy look. Depending on the fabric, the cut of the fabric or what you mix and match it with, earth tones can look rustic, festive, warm and soft while infusing sensibility, sexuality and also adding a slim and petite effect to your profile. You can team shades of grey with blue or green. Be experimental with the cut of the outfit. Keep it simple or go for fabrics with lining and checks. Half-sleeved jackets , knee-length skirts and tunics with a combination of lining and plain fabric an be an option. Earth tones also adds poise to your look by enhancing face features and complimenting your skin tone.

It is really easy to accessorise with earth tones, as they match well with a lot of the clothes in one’s wardrobe.  Like the brown leather jackets that have stayed hot throughout the ages, add bandana or long gloves and you can create a very unique look.  And, brown doesn't have to be boring. It can be very elaborate, elegant and vibrant. Mix and match it with some gold, red, bright rusty-orange or green and it becomes even festive. And don't for a moment think  that this colour combination is just for winter! Spring or autumn, earth tones can be part of your wardrobe forever.
