'The centre to offer courses in botany, zoology, English from next year'

PG in chemistry, comp science at Chikkaluvara PG centre: VC

PG courses in chemistry, computer science, economics, political science, social work and commerce will be offered at PG Centre of Mangalore University at Chikkaluvara from the next academic year (2014-15), said Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankaramurthy. 

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, he said that physics, botany, zoology, electronics, Kannada, English, history, and sociology courses will be offered during 2015-16. Science block is ready at the PG centre. The block was constructed at a cost of Rs four crore. 

The work on arts block is likely to be completed by June. The estimated cost of the PG Centre at Chikkaluvara is Rs 23 crore, of which, Rs 10.87 crore has been completed. The government had released Rs three crore. The Mangalore University has earmarked Rs five crore for the PG centre in its budget for 2014-15. 

He said that  under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), the State will get Rs 1,000 crore. Each university is likely to get Rs 60 crore to Rs 70 crore. The Chikkaluvara PG Centre is likely to get Rs 10 crore to Rs 12 crore. 

“In the last four years, 650 students have passed NET in Mangalore University jurisdiction. A sum of Rs 20 crore has been earmarked for research. The university has appeared for the reaccreditation from the NAAC after a gap of 14 years. The team had completed four-day assessment of Mangalore University recently,” he said. 

“I will retire on March 3. With the support of the teaching, non teaching, Academic Council and Syndicate members, I could take up development work in the university,” the VC said. 

MLC M C Nanaiah, College Principal Dr Parvathi Appayya among others were present. The VC was offered a felicitation by the Field Marshal K M Cariappa College on the occasion.
