RAW official, three members of family found dead

A 52-year-old Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer was found hanging, while his wife and two children were found dead with their heads smashed in a house in south Delhi’s Sadiq Nagar on Saturday, said the police.

Ananya Chakraborty, who hailed from Assam, was an inspector-rank field officer in RAW. He was living with wife Jayashree, 43, son Arnab, 17, and 12-year-old daughter Disha in Sadiq Nagar Sector-3.

Though no suicide note was recovered from the three-bedroom government house, police believe Ananya committed suicide after killing his wife and children by smashing their heads with a hammer.

“A blood-stained hammer has been recovered from the house,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) B S Jaiswal. Sources said marital discord preceded the incident.

Jayashree was a teacher with Lady Irwin School in south Delhi’s Defence Colony, while Arnab and Disha were studying in a Kendriya Vidyalaya near the house.

“Jayashree taught social studies and had joined the school two months ago,” said another police officer.

The incident came to light after the family’s domestic help, Anita, came to work at around 1 pm. She rang the door bell several times, but did not get any response. She then went to work at a nearby house and returned after an hour, but again did not get any response.

“Anita alerted some neighbours and informed Ananya’s family friend Moumita Das, who lives in the neighbourhood. Moumita, along with her husband, called on the couple’s mobile phones, found them switched off, and informed police,” added the officer.

A police team reached the house and found the main door bolted from inside. They asked the society's security guard, Mandal, to try entering the second-floor house through the balcony.

“Mandal tried to enter the house by climbing up the drain pipe, but found the balcony’s door locked from inside. We then decided to break open the door, and found Ananya hanging from the ceiling of the drawing room,” said the officer.

Jayashree and Disha were found lying in a pool of blood, and Arnab was found dead in another room. The bodies were taken to AIIMS after a crime and forensic team inspected the house. They have been preserved in the mortuary and will be handed over to relatives after post-mortem on Sunday. "

A team from the Defence Colony police station is investigating the matter.
