Tenders to be invited for 1,000 MW power

Power Minister D K Shivakumar said on Sunday that the government would call for open tenders for long-term purchase of 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to overcome shortage.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting the Varahi underground powerhouse in the Hosangadi Gram Panchayat limits.

The minister said that the State government would sign a memorandum of understanding on March 7, alongside the central government, to buy 450 MW from Damodar Valley Corporation, a Kolkata-based thermal and hydropower generating public sector undertaking. Grid connectivity is available, the minister said.

Promising that there would be no loadshedding in the State even in an emergency, Shivakumar said that the demand would be met at any cost. This would be in the interest of children studying for exams, the minister said.

The government is committed to provide seven-hour power supply to farmers, for four days and three nights in a week, he said.
