Predominant Muslim political party Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) is now on a mission to provide cheap and affordable food to the urban poor in Hyderabad and other Telangana districts.

On the party’s 56th anniversary, Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain launched a scheme to provide mid-day meals to the poor at a subsidised price of Rs 5.

“Rs 5 cannot even buy a single cup of tea, but the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), led by the MIM, has taken up the task to provide a decent meal to the poor,” said Majid, while launching the scheme at Nampally here.

The GHMC has hired the Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide clean and hygienic food and is all set to start the Rs 5-per-meal food scheme in five more places in the next 2 to 3 days, he said.

A committee of corporators will monitor the day-to-day activities of the scheme. Donations, by which I-T exemptions can be availed, have also been invited.
