Crime meant as act of revenge: Police

A two-year-old girl, kidnapped from north-east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar early on Saturday, was rescued from Hapur district of UP on Monday. Two persons alleged to be involved in the kidnapping have been arrested, but the person who kidnapped the baby managed to escape.

Police said the arrested persons, which included a 45-year-old woman, have told them that the kidnapping was carried out as a revenge for a previous day’s minor quarrel between the absconding accused Raju, 26, and the victim’s mother Neetu Upadhyay. The duo was next door neighbours in Pusta in Sonia Vihar.

The girl was playing outside her house at 8 am on Saturday when the accused lured her away promising to give her chocolates. The mother found  her child missing and informed police.

A case was immediately registered and a hunt was launched. Police made public announcement at nearby localities and searched the border areas of UP without any result.
They finally learnt that Raju, a labourer from UP’s Bulandshahr district but living in the same building, had gone missing since the incident. A raid at his hometown failed to yield results, but police soon developed clues on the whereabouts of the girl.

She was finally found with Raju’s accomplice  Geeta in his friend’s house in Brij Ghat, Hapur, on Monday morning. Geeta and the house owner Santosh, 45, were arrested from the spot. But Raju managed to give police the slip.

Police said Raju kidnapped the child along with Geeta and took her by train to Hapur. The arrested duo told police that Raju did not plan to demand ransom and kidnapped the baby only to seek revenge. He was, however, uncertain about his next move.

The girl was found unharmed and healthy and has been united with her mother. Efforts are on to nab Raju.
