A 22-year-old youth who jumped out from the window of a “burning” bus was crushed under the wheels of the same vehicle near Bhatrahalli in KR Puram traffic police limits on Friday.

Suraj Paswan, a native of Bihar and resident of Hoskote was travelling by BMTC bus (route number 317A) on Friday morning. Manjunath, the driver of the bus noticed fumes emanating from the engine and jumped out of the bus near Bhatrahalli bus stop. The conductor too abandoned the bus, police said.

With no one at the wheel, the bus was moving forward, albeit slowly. Around 35 passengers in the vehicle panicked  and jumped out by breaking the windows. Some got down from the rear and front doors of the bus. By this time, bus encountered a slightly elevated road and hence started moving backwards. Suraj, who jumped out of a window, came down under the wheels of the bus.

Passersby who noticed the accident shifted Suraj to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. He was an employee with a granite company. The KR Puram traffic police have registered a case and are on the lookout for the absconding driver and conductor.
