EC books 12,000 cases of code violation in TN

The Election Commission in Tamil Nadu has cracked the whip on political parties by booking more than 12,000 cases of violation of model code of conduct.

The Commission also seized cash to the tune of more than Rs 1.5 crore from various persons, besides confiscating gift articles worth several lakhs.

Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar told Deccan Herald on Wednesday that as many as 8,345 cases had been booked against various political parties across the state for violating the model code of conduct. The cases concern defacement of walls in public properties.

"In addition, a total of 4,602 cases have been filed against defacement of private places,” he said.

Stating that revenue officials, aided by the police, have seized a total of Rs 1.5 crore in cash from across Tamil Nadu, he said the largest sum of Rs 35 lakh unaccounted-for money was seized in Namakkal district on Tuesday.

He said officials would intensify inspections across the Tamil Nadu, especially in the border areas, in the days leading up to the election.

Enforcing the model code of conduct, poll officials ordered the district authorities to stop distribution of free mixer-grinder and laptops, a popular scheme of the AIADMK government, and warned them of strict disciplinary action if they were found violating the rule.

Watch teams formed

A few political parties in the state have also formed watch teams to prevent their rivals from flouting the poll code.

Kumar said the approval of an Election Commission of India-appointed panel was needed for launching a poll campaign in the social media.

The Commission had sought clarification from the AIADMK on its proposed social media campaign, he said.

Propaganda material

The party had said it would provide compact discs of its propaganda material to the poll body. The material would be examined by a panel constituted for the purpose.
