Chhattisgarh emerge champions

Chhattisgarh girls registered a resounding 6-1 win over Kerala to wear the crown in fourth Hockey India women’s National Junior championship (B Division) at the Chamundi Vihar ground here on Thursday.

Sadhna Sengar, who has been in brilliant touch throughout the tournament, opened the account for Chhattisgarh in the sixth minute and seven minutes later Renu Yadav sounded the board to extend the lead to 2-0. Upasana Singh struck in the 27th-minute though Kerala showed signs of a fightback through a goal from Sindhu MR a minute before the end of the first half.

Going into the second half with a two-goal advantage, Chhattisgarh stepped on the accelerator and left Kerala in their wake.

In the third-place play-off, Rinki Kujur and Laxmi Ekka scored a goal apiece as Gangpur, Odisha, defeated Manipur.

Result: Chhattisgarh: 6 (Sadhna Sengar 6th, Renu Yadav 13th, Upsana Singh 27th, Ishika Chaudhary 44th, 62nd; Ishika Thakur 63th) bt Hockey Kerala: 1 (Sindhu MR 34th).Third place play-off: Gangpur (Odisha): 2 (Rinki Kujur 2nd, Laxmi Ekka 28th) bt Manipur: 0.
