BJP patriarch skips parliamentary, poll panel meets

Advani gets Gandhinagar against his wishes

The BJP on Wednesday renominated L K Advani to contest from Gandhinagar seat, overruling the party patriarch’s desire to represent  Bhopal constituency.

Advani played hardball during the day following his unease with prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who has opted for Vadodara as his second constituency.

Advani did not attend the back to back meetings of the parliamentary board and the central election committee (CEC) as he told party president Rajnath Singh that since his name would be discussed, it would not be appropriate for him to participate.

This was the third time in less than a year that an upset Advani expressed his displeasure over decisions not taken as per his wishes. He had done that on June 9 last year, by skipping party’s Goa conclave where Modi was anointed poll campaign chief and again on September 13, when he decided not to attend parliamentary board meeting that decided to elevate Modi as prime ministerial candidate.

Late in the night, PTI quoting sources reported that Advani has conveyed displeasure to party leaders over fielding him from Gandhinagar.

A senior BJP leader, who was part of the meeting, said that it was unanimously decided to persuade Advani to contest from Gandhinagar. Later, senior leaders, including Sushma Swaraj and Nitin Gadkari, went to Advani’s residence to convey the party’s decision to him.

Interestingly, post-meeting, Modi rushed to have an interaction with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The BJP also decided to field Modi from Vadodara in Gujarat. The party had already announced his candidature from Varanasi. The Ahmedabad East constituency was also considered as a second seat for Modi but the leadership decided to go with Vadodara finally. Advani, who represented Gandhinagar for five terms, was insisting on contest from Bhopal and not Gandhinagar, a move that was seen as his way of showing displeasure over Modi's elevation.
