Police are looking out for a tractor driver who is suspected to have fled after strangling his wife at their home in Mahadevapura police station limits late on Tuesday night. Marital discord is said to be the motive for murder.

Gopi, the 30-year-old suspect, reportedly strangled his wife, Geethamma, 24, with a sari some time after they had a fight over having dinner at their home in Pai Layout around 9 pm. Gopi is said to have found fault with her cooking. He then went to retire in another shed in protest, police said.

A while later, Geethamma’s brother Venkatesh came to see her. She told him about the argument she had with her husband. But Venkatesh asked her to ignore the issue and reconcile with her husband. After that, he went to retire in his shed.

On Wednesday morning, he returned to see his sister but was stunned to find her dead in the bed. There was no sight of Gopi. He then called the police who registered a case on his complaint.

Gopi hails from Rayadurg in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, while Geethamma was from Chitradurga. The couple had moved to Bangalore five years ago. They have three children, the youngest of whom, an 18-month-old baby girl, lived with them. Two elder children live with Geethamma’s parents in Chitradurga. Geethamma worked as a construction worker.
