Tinseltown neta plans music treat to woo voters

Biswajeet Chatterjee, yesteryear Tollywood-turned-Bollywood filmstar, is all set to fight for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) from New Delhi constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The debutant candidate is confident of lending a national look to the TMC, which is nurturing its ambitions outside West Bengal.

“When I started off as an actor in Kolkata, I was given the role of a junior artist. Eventually, I established myself as a hero in Tollywood and later in Bollywood. Now, I am keen on venturing into a new chapter of my life,” said Chatterjee.

The actor-turned-politician is considering a different take on campaigning for the polls. “I am an unknown face here. Also, there is not much time left now for door-to-door campaigning. So I am planning on holding musical events in the city, where anybody can walk in. It would be a cultural-cum-campaigning event,” said Chatterjee. Other Bollywood stars and his son Prosenjit Chatterjee, an acclaimed Tollywood actor, are also likely to join him in these events, he added.

“Besides, we will also have road shows and press conferences.”

According to the actor, wherever he is going to “mingle with people”, be it New Delhi Kalibari or a conference, people are requesting him to sing for them. “This is because they remember me as the musical hero of Bollywood,” said Chatterjee.

The actor even sang at the Ramlila Maidan rally of TMC on March 11, which ended as a flop show with a slim turnout of crowd.

What prompted the actor to join TMC besides Mamata Banerjee’s “clean brand of politics” is the respect that people from the film industry in Bengal has been given by Banerjee. “The respect and prominence Didi has given to people from the film industry has really moved me. Though people have criticised her for highlighting on the glamour quotient, I admire her for this effort. After all, my first allegiance is towards the film industry,” said Chatterjee.

The matinee idol first came in touch with Banerjee in 2009. “When she approached me to fight from New Delhi a month-and-a-half back, I readily agreed. Politics will be a platform for me to do some good to the people.”

Chatterjee is set to address the issue of corruption in his campaigns. With the belief that “a good leader can change the nation”, Chatterjee wants to rely on Banerjee’s ideals to bag votes in the Capital.

“Didi’s crusade for honesty and the slogan of Maa, maati, manush will help TMC multiply from a regional party to a national one,” said the actor, who has given hits such as Bees Saal Baad, April Fool, Kismat and Yeh Raat Phir Na Ayegi, among others.
