EC officials seize Rs 75 lakh in cash

The office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka, will work in tandem with the Police and Income-Tax officials, to conduct free and fair polls.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Thursday, Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha said the Election Commission, Police and the I-T department will share intelligence regarding electoral malpractices.

A toll free helpline - 1800-425-77-07 - has been set up by the I-T department to receive complaints, if any, he said. Jha said EC officials have so far seized Rs 75 lakh in cash and items including 2,000 T-shirts from Kolar city. 63 sarees and 1,580 caps were seized from Magadi taluk, he said.

Officials have seized 10,700 litres of liquor worth Rs 60 lakh, Jha said adding that 14,835 anti-social persons had been rounded up in as many as 7,381 cases. While expenditure observers are already in place, expenditure observers will be arriving and will be in place from March 26, the last date for filing nominations, Jha said.

Government officials on election duty and police working in the same jurisdiction for more than three years will be transfered as per the Election Commission guidelines, Jha added.
