Shillong test for on-song Bengaluru

Having been turned over the last time they were here, table-toppers Bengaluru FC will hope to make it a more happy occasion this time when they take on Shillong Lajong in an I-League encounter on Sunday.

BFC (37 from 19), who had suffered an embarrassing 2-3 defeat at the hands of Rangdajied at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium here on March 1, have won only four of their eight away games so far this season and they can ill afford any more slip-ups if they want to maintain their position.

Second placed Salgaocar (34 from 20) had an opportunity to cut the lead at the top to just a point but they managed only a 0-0 draw against United SC on Saturday.

BFC will be feeling confident, and in skipper Sunil Chhetri, who has been amongst the goals this season, they have someone who is playing at the top of his game.

But Shillong won’t be cowed just because the league leaders are in town. They have a squad that is entirely capable of throwing a spanner in the BFC works, with the likes of Cornell Glen and Uilliams Silva offering substantial goal threats.

It promises to be a fascinating clash and the winner could well be decided from the subs’ bench.
