Kalam to woo youngsters to vote on April 17

It is a move by the district administration to zero in on young voters

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has planned an innovative programme to create awareness on the need to vote in election.

Young voters will get an opportunity to interact with former president of India A P J Abdul Kalam at a programme on April 1.

Addressing mediapersons, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said the interaction programme will be held at Zilla Panchayat Netravathi hall at 4 pm. One boy and one girl student from each college will be given an opportunity to participate in the programme.

The participation is open for all those who have newly enrolled their names in the voters list or exercising franchise for the first time in the election.  Students, who belong to the age group of 18 to 20 years, should bring authorisation letter from the institute and their EPIC to participate in the programme.

The district administration took the initiative to hold the SVEEP programme after confirming the appointment from Kalam’s office, he said.

“We have plans to make the programme live through TV channels. All colleges in the district may make arrangements for the students to watch the programme through TV channels in their own premises,” the DC said.

The students, who want to participate in the programme may also send mails to register their names through kalamsiratmangalore@gmail.com, kalamsironethicalvoting@gmail.com or kalamsironsveep@gmail.com, the Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim said.

Members of political parties or general public will not be allowed to interact with the former president.
